What are MUDS and how does Agamemnon fit into this genre?
Agamemnon is an online game set in medieval England.
More specifically, it fits into the category of MUDS. MUDS simply means
Multiple user dungeons. MUDS draw from the idea of multiple individuals
connecting, originally via modems, to one computer and logging into
a fantasy world. Since the arrival of the internet the sizes and number
of these games has risen dramatically. The potential for the amount
of players has become significantly larger. This has meant that MUDS
have risen in both popularity and quality. Agamemnon is the newest
inclusion to the MUDS genre. Historically, MUDS often focused their
settings in medieval fantasy realms, yet we do not feel that this genre
has been given a fair representation. The quantity of MUDS does not
bespeak the quality. We aim to approach the design and construction
of Agamemnon with a critical eye to the history of the MUDS genre.
To represent Medieval England in a playable and comprehensively researched
game. You will not find the typical hack and slash dungeons that have
been turned almost into an icon of the MUDS games which exist today.
Instead you will find a land which is rich in its descriptive content
and diversity. Agamemnon like none of the other MUDS in this genre
is about conflict, friendships and diversity. Medieval England is a
country of vast imaginative depths and historical richness. We plumb
them all.
MUDS traditionally have been in the form of textual
games whereby you enter commands to your character. Agamemnon is no
different from any others MUDS in this way. To move about the land
you would type "North" in order to head northwards. The land
is split into locations, like many MUDS, and your character interacts
with objects or other players within those locations. Agamemnon has
brought something new to the MUDS genre when considering this mode
of interaction. Instead of the simplicity employed by many MUDS, we
have introduced a new dynamic to the gaming spectrum. The land is essentially
3D. Graphical MUDS have employed this idea for years: what you see
happening in the world about you is not restricted to the location
you are standing in, but rather, your character will have senses in
much the same way as any human being would: sight, sound and smell.
This is particularly important in terms of its realism in MUDS when
considering the sight of your character. Think about your own sight...
You look off into the distance and see things to your left and right
with less detail than those objects which are closer to you and in
focus. Your character will interact in Agamemnon in exactly the same
way. Fog for example waill change exactly what you see.... Shapes and
people will loom into view, instead of the rather bland ineffectual
weather which you will find in many MUDS. Thus, the distance you are
able to see will govern what type and how detailed the information
you receive about the land is. Added to the MUDS environment in Agamemnon
is the idea of sound. If you are standing inside a building and a horseman
comes pelting by the window, you may only see a blur but you can be
sure you will hear exactly what has just happened and how fast it has
happened. This aspect of the MUDS environment also allows total flexibility
for the player involved. The more you take care of your character (little
drinking, plenty of sleep and no injuries) the better honed your character
will be and the more success you are likely to have.
We have on occasions been asked whether or not Agamemnon
is part of the MUDS educational genre. These MUDS, although a novel
idea, are not what we are aiming for. However, we have researched the
time of medieval Englan extensively and the historical accuracy of
the game is very important to us. MUDS can be used in an educational
way but we feel this issue being anything other than an advantage,
rather than a focus, would dertract too much from the fantasy element
of the land. MUDS have an excellent potential to be very informative
on topics such as medieval England. This is simply because MUDS are,
for the most part, text based. This allows people who play MUDS to
read and enjoy exactly what they want to, rather than having anything
thrust upon them. If would you like to learn more about medieval England
then Agamemnon is certainly the perfect place to gain a grasp of the
atmosphere of the time. This includes the key people such as kings
and noblemen; social and economic structures. It should not be thought
of as a text book environment, we have elaborated and used our imagination
with much of the history. The game, like all MUDS, reflects this. Although
MUDS are our priority you are still welcome to e-mail us with any questions
about the sources for our game. Research can be painful and we'll be
very pleased to help you with yours if you like what you see in our
MUDS environment. In addition to this, if you have any comments regarding
Agammemnon or the MUDS environment, or indeed how may improve our MUDS
environment, feel free to contact us.
